On March 25th, the Passaic Valley International Business Practice Firm (Chocolit, Inc www.chocolitinc.com ) headed to the 69th Regiment armory in New York City for their 5th annual Virtual Enterprises trade-fair. The students were representing their virtual premium chocolate company, Chocolit. Inc. The 15 honor students, accompanied by their proud “C.E.F” (Chief Executive Facilitator) Mr. Kevin Ketcho, were in competition with over 140 different “businesses”, both nationally and internationally. The students were striving for various titles given by the board, including Ms. Iris Blanc and Ms. Melanie Mortimer. Chocolit. Inc excelled in the tradefair and nabbed the award for “Outstanding Booth”, due to their professional appearance that stood out in a crowd. Passaic Valley surpassed schools from Germany, Brazil, Austria and Indonesia.

The IBPF students have had quite the school year. They have had many successful fundraisers that have been sponsored by the always welcoming Bromilows chocolate store, located in Woodland Park. The class has also made their way to Totowa middle school to participate on a career day inspired presentation, run entirely by the students. Inside the classroom, the students work everyday on their virtual business, using alias’s to sell and buy on a private market run by Virtual Enterprises.

The class has had nothing but positive feedback from their community and high school. The students are given hands on experience about business that cannot be found just sitting in a classroom. This class leaves a lasting impression on the students about how the real world works and often times inspire them to continue the business career.

Passaic Valley Today

LITTLE FALLS – Students from Passaic Valley High School recently entered two business student competitions with first and third place finishes.

Noel Ruggiero entered an investor writing competition and won first place.

Ruggiero won the PNC Region InvestWrite Competition. Currently in her senior year, Ruggiero's winning essay entitled, "The Guide to a Regretless Future," was submitted in early December. The essay will now be automatically entered in the national competition and the winner will be chosen at the end of January.

"This is a national and regional essay writing competition, which follows the Ruberic system," said Elizabeth Reidel, New England regional coordinator for SIFMA, Foundation for Investor Education. "The three main things we look for is understanding of subject matter, rationale and whether the essay was thoughtful, including writing style. This was a great achievement by Noel and we congratulate her."

According to Reidel, Ruggiero went up against students from Hudson, Bergen, Passaic and Essex counties. The competition has been around since 2003 and is produced by "The Stock Market Game" program.

"I have the great fortune of having her in two of my classes this year and she is really going places," said Keith Ketcho, PVHS business teacher. "We're so proud of her for winning first place in the PNC region of the New Jersey High School competition."

PVHS students also were third place finishers in the high school division of the fall 2009 New Jersey Stock Market Game, for the Oct. 12 to Dec. 18 session. The program has a total of 2,552 students spanning elementary, middle and high school. The five students on the team honored are Erik Barnes (captain), junior; Stephanie Piereschi, senior; John Dantoni, senior; Eric Skyta, junior; and Albert Zicker, junior.

"They made $24,767.83 in a 10 week period to finish third in the entire state," added Ketcho. "Our incredible team beat out 1,429 other high school teams throughout the state for a strong finish and we're so proud of all of them."

All PVHS student winners will be honored at William Paterson University on Feb. 2. The event will be hosted by SIFMA, parent of NJ SMG, PNC Bank and WPU.
